As winter transitions to spring, our vineyards come alive with a breathtaking display of bright yellow mustard flowers. This annual transformation is more than just a picturesque scene—it’s a vital part of our sustainable farming practices.
At Napa Wine Company, we embrace mustard season as an essential element of vineyard health. Acting as a natural cover crop, mustard plants enrich the soil by adding nutrients, suppressing weeds, and improving overall biodiversity. Their deep roots help break up compacted soil, making it easier for vine roots to access water and nutrients, while also reducing erosion during the rainy season.
Sustainability is at the core of what we do, and our owner, Andrew Hoxsey, has taken it a step further by creating his own unique mustard seed blend—the Hoxsey Blend. This custom mix includes a variety of mustard species carefully selected to thrive in the diverse soils across our vineyards. By curating this special blend, Andrew has ensured that each vineyard benefits from a tailored approach to soil health and vitality.
This year, we’re celebrating mustard season with seven different vineyard sites, each showcasing the stunning golden waves of flowers.
